Celebrating a decade of art and education
Step into the spotlight at Berkeley Rep’s ONSTAGE gala! This year, as we honor the ongoing artistic excellence of this internationally renowned nonprofit theatre, we also toast the 10th anniversary of its School of Theatre. Over the last decade, the School has touched the lives of nearly a quarter of a million students with its arts education programs.
Legendary actress Rita Moreno hosts a spectacular evening that features a four-course gourmet dinner, exquisite wines and spirits and an opportunity to bid on culinary adventures and unforgettable getaways. Celebrate the theatre that brings artists like Mikhail Baryshnikov and Eve Ensler to the Bay Area. Join us for Berkeley Rep’s biggest party of the year!

The Four Seasons San Francisco. Daniel Handler. Rita Moreno. Willie Brown. April 23, 2011. The stage had been set, and now all guests had to do was sit back, hang on for the ride and enjoy!
Berkeley Rep’s annual gala, ONSTAGE, is a pinnacle event for the Theatre, but also the season’s most important night to raise critical funds for its artistic programming and arts education outreach. With ticket sales comprising only half of Berkeley Rep’s revenue, the Theatre needs to raise an additional $3.6 million in Annual Fund support to keep ticket prices affordable and make educational opportunities available for Bay Area youth. The gala is important to contributing toward that goal, and this year’s event proved an incredible success, raising $587,000!
Guests at ONSTAGE enjoyed a sensational four-course meal, and participated in a silent auction before being treated to a performance by Rita Moreno, who dazzled them with a peek into her new show, Rita Moreno: Life Without Makeup, premiering at Berkeley Rep next season. Things really began to heat up during the live auction as emcee Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) used his witty repartee and trademark bon mots to goad bidders to dig deep into their wallets and support their favorite theatre company. A select few were lucky enough to win the prized lots, which ran the gamut from dinner with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown to stays in Paris, a World Series commemorative bat signed by Tim Lincecum, and more.
Auctioneer David Reynolds soon turned everyone’s attention to the programs offered by Berkeley Rep’s School of Theatre programs, which reach 20,000 students each season. Pledge cards sprang up around the room as people voiced their support in a crescendo of philanthropic giving.
As guests prepared to take their leave, a spirit of goodwill prevailed throughout the ballroom—a sentiment that cannot be manufactured, but rather created only through the sincere generosity shown at 2011’s ONSTAGE.
